Marcelo Carauta

With over eighteen years of work experience in agricultural economics and risk management, I am passionate about developing innovative and sustainable solutions for weather and agricultural risks. As an underwriter at the Global Weather & AgRisk team of Munich Re, one of the world's leading reinsurance companies, I work with corporate clients worldwide to design and implement parametric risk transfer solutions that meet clients' specific needs and budgets. 

In my current role, I apply my expertise in economics, commodity, and financial markets to evaluate and price various types of parametric insurance products, such as index-based crop insurance. I also use my strong analytical and modeling skills to conduct market research, risk assessment, and portfolio optimization, using tools such as R Statistical Software and geographic information system (GIS). Additionally, I leverage my academic background and lecturing experience to communicate complex concepts and findings effectively to clients, partners, and stakeholders. Some of my achievements include developing risk transfer solutions for the Brazilian agricultural sector, securing a considerable contract with a significant agribusiness player in Brazil, and publishing peer-reviewed articles in top worldwide scientific journals.

I have more than eighteen years of working experience dealing with many different aspects of risk, such as financial and climate risks, as well as risk transfer solutions and portfolio management.

As an educational background, I have a Ph.D. in agricultural economics and a master's and bachelor's degrees in economics with a focus on finance. As a working experience, I have 2 years of experience as an insurance broker, 3 years as a risk analyst and trader in asset management, 10 years as an agricultural economist, and 2 as an agricultural underwriter. Regarding skills, I have strong knowledge of programming languages (R, VBA, Java, Python), optimization (Matlab, MPMAS, CPLEX), online databases (SQL), geospatial analysis, as well as stress tests, and value at risk.
