    In the Future Digital Engineering team, we are continuously working on the development of future concepts, CAE technologies, components and materials for Mercedes-Benz Cars and Vans technology carriers.

    As a very large auxiliary consumer, vehicle air conditioning plays an important role in increasing the efficiency of our vehicles. One possible technology that could contribute to this goal is dehumidification of the vehicle cabin, especially in winter conditions. Among other things, dehumidification would allow the air conditioning to be operated with a higher proportion of recirculated air. As a result, the air would not have to be heated from the cold ambient temperature to the target temperature for heating, but would be heated from the cabin temperature to the target temperature, thus saving air conditioning capacity. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which can adsorb water vapor at low temperatures, are particularly suitable for dehumidification. In a reversible process, this water vapor can be desorbed again by increasing the temperature. Among other things, components of the air conditioning system would be coated with MOFs for this purpose. The potential of dehumidification with MOFs is to be tested metrologically using a test bench in a vehicle environment.

    As part of the work, an existing test bench is to be used and, if necessary, expanded in order to investigate the potential of dehumidifying the vehicle cabin.

    The following tasks are to be undertaken:

  • Familiarization with the topic of metal-organic framework compounds (MOFs) using relevant literature, internal documentation, etc.
  • Commissioning of the existing test bench and the corresponding measurement software
  • Development of a test plan to identify the parameters influencing the dehumidification dynamics
  • Preparation of the test procedure in the vehicle environment and in the climate chamber/climate wind tunnel. Subsequent implementation of the test plan
  • Preparation and analysis of the measurement data generated
  • Interpretation of the measurement results with regard to possible use for vehicle air conditioning
  • Derive potential improvements/revisions for the existing test bench, particularly with regard to increased dynamics and reduced package requirements
  • If necessary, integration of additional dehumidification components of a different design into the test bench
  • If necessary, extension of the test stand for modified air flow
  • Final documentation of the work results and outlook on possible further research steps
  • This student project offers a unique opportunity to investigate an early, innovative technology in a vehicle environment and to drive this technology towards principle and concept suitability.

    Qualifikationen
  • Degree in the field of engineering
  • Experience in carrying out measurements and using measurement software, ideally CANape
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office tools and a CAD program, ideally Siemens NX
  • Good knowledge of thermodynamics and fluid mechanics
  • Willingness to carry out measurements in cold climatic conditions (-°C to °C)
  • Enthusiasm and initiative
