    :

    Southside Virginia Community College is seeking a Recruitment, Retention, and Re-entry (R3) Coach as part of the College's expansion plan for the Campus Within Walls program. SVCC's Campus Within Walls program provides second chances through higher education to incarcerated students. Through college education, Campus Within Walls provides our students with the tools they need to successfully re-enter society and become productive citizens.

    The R3 Coach will address barriers to entering and maintaining participation in the Clean Energy Workforce, encourage success among program participants, provide guided assistance and follow-up to potential students from the point of inquiry to enrollment, utilize technology and other resources to strengthen student connections to the College, lead presentations to potential participants, provide information on community-based support services, and provide coaching to participants to encourage pathway persistence.

    The successful candidate must be willing to travel to and work within the following correctional centers:

    Lunenburg Correctional Center, Nottoway Correctional Center, Baskerville Correctional Center, Virginia Correctional Center, State Farm Correctional Center, Halifax Correctional Center, Greensville Correctional Center

    Some of the duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assist with the college application process
  • Connect students to financial aid resources and to scholarship opportunities through the College's foundation
  • Discuss career and educational goals and available pathways with students
  • Provide academic advising assistance and guidance on course selection
  • Lead presentations to potential participants to inform them of the Clean Energy career options and related SVCC educational opportunities
  • Facilitate communication pathways that participants may utilize once released and obtain employment
  • Provide information on and referrals to community-based support service agencies that provide assistance to those recently released from incarceration
  • Special Assignments May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor. KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Valid driver's license
  • Proficient, working knowledge of internet applications and PC-based software (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite, Google docs, etc.)
  • Knowledge of barriers to educational success and a desire to help others reach their educational goals
  • Experience working with racially, ethnically, economically and age-diverse individuals
  • Strong interpersonal skills to help engage, provide support to, and motivate students
  • Excellent customer service skills, including the ability to effectively follow up and follow through
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Effective problem-solving skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently as well as part of a team
  • Discretion in handling confidential information
  • Additional Considerations
  • Knowledge of the Virginia Department of Corrections
  • Previous experience in a correctional setting
  • Knowledge of available financial aid and scholarship information
  • Knowledge of enrollment procedures
