    Position Summary

    This recruitment will be used to fill five part-time (a maximum of 40 hours per week) Summer Camp Educational Assistant and Lifeguard positions for the Oregon 4-H Center summer camp in the Division of Extension and Engagement at Oregon State University (OSU).Our goal is to provide a quality and safe environment for all campers, parents, and staff. Employees should always be prepared and willing to respond to the unexpected. We pride ourselves in challenging our employees to grow as individuals while gaining professional experience. Position Duties (100%) Specific duties and percentages vary depending on the student assignment but duties may include:
  • Responsible for leading specialized activities for children during but not limited to:
  • Lifeguarding at pool and canoeing, leading camp activities such as Archery, Arts and Crafts, or Campfire.
  • Preparing and implementing lesson plans, providing feedback, maintaining safe learning environments, and assisting other instructors and camp counselors.
  • Helping with kitchen operations such as bussing tables, washing dishes, and minor food preparation.
  • Attending orientations, meetings, and in-service trainings.
  • Completing and submitting appropriate documents as needed (incident/accident reports, monthly timesheets, lesson plans, attendance records, etc.)
  • Maintaining equipment and supplies inventory.
  • Administer first aid and active emergency action steps if medical attention is required.
  • For leadership positions:
  • Training staff in all camp skills, tasks, and protocols related to overall operations.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement weekly schedules.
  • Delegate and manage spur-of-the-moment events with little planning.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standardHigh School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling programUndergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per termUndergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per termGraduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
  • *International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center. Additional Required Qualifications
  • Current, valid First Aid certification by start of programming.
  • Current, valid CPR Adult/Child certification by start of programming
  • Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect (RRCAN) certification by start of programming.
  • Must have clean driving record and ability to pass OSU driver safety test.
  • Completed lifeguard Certification by a nationally recognized institution such as Red Cross or YMCA by start of programming.
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.

    This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Previous experience working in a residential camp setting.
  • Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • The student worker may be required to work up to approximately 20 hours per week. Weekly work hours are a maximum of 40 hours per week during summer months. With required intermittent training prior to camp opening.
  • Position works directly with minors.
  • Duties are performed in an environment suitable for the activity/sport they are instructing such as a gym, kitchen, field, pool, hiking trails and uneven terrain, etc.
  • Position may need to assist participants with emergency medication and medical monitoring (e.g. EpiPen, diabetes testing) as needed.
