The Manufacturing Technology Institute MTI at RWTH Aachen is synonymous with successful and pioneering research in the field of production technology. In close cooperation with national and international partners from industry and science, we shape the future of manufacturing and production technology in diverse and practice-relevant research and development projects.

The Digital Transformation department develops future-oriented solutions for data-driven modeling, monitoring and networking of sophisticated manufacturing processes such as milling, forming or grinding for the production of complex products. We work on this in an interdisciplinary team with 11 employees from the areas of (industrial) engineering, computer science and mathematics based on a profound understanding of the system. We use everything from the basics of statistics to the application of innovative data-driven modeling approaches to design innovative solutions directly in the process and for customers.

We are looking for a doctoral student (f/m/d) to join our team who will support our work, particularly in the area of data science or applied machine learning. The focus here is on developing procedures for the systematic preparation and analysis of data from various manufacturing processes in an experimental context. As part of publicly funded research projects and industrial projects, solutions are researched at an early stage of development and their suitability for industrial use is examined. At the interface between manufacturing technology, computer science and mathematics, we offer an exceptional opportunity for interdisciplinary collaboration in an exciting and practice-relevant subject area.

    Your profile

    • University degree (Master or comparable) in the MINT field (e.g. mathematics, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, computer science, etc.)
    • Motivation to work on both scientific questions and applied industrial challenges
    • Willingness to learn programming languages, especially Python

    Your tasks

As a doctoral student - Machine Learning Engineer (f/m/d) in the Digital Transformation department, you will develop solutions for obtaining information from large amounts of field data from a wide variety of manufacturing processes and process chains. In close collaboration with our interdisciplinary team, you will combine the latest developments in the field of data-driven modeling with practical problems in manufacturing technology and validate the effectiveness of computer science and mathematical methods in manufacturing applications. In particular, the focus is on analyzing large amounts of time series in the form of sensor data such as force, current or vibration curves together with event data from control components. Parts of the range of tasks include:

    • Carrying out/leading research and industrial projects in the context of the digital transformation of manufacturing processes
    • Develop and apply statistical and machine learning methods
    • Working with Python and Azure Cloud solutions
    • Presenting research results at international conferences
    • Supervising student work (bachelor's and master's theses)
    • There is an opportunity for a doctorate

If you are ready to be at the forefront of digital transformation in production technology and apply your skills in a dynamic, interdisciplinary environment, we would like to get to know you. Please send your complete application documents, consisting of a meaningful CV, a letter of motivation in which you explain your suitability and interest in the position, as well as any references, to the email address below.
