    From 1 October 2024 , as part of the research Project "Productive Signs:

    A computer-assisted analysis of evolutionary, typological, and cognitive dimensions of word familiesâ€, funded by a Consolidator Grant from the European Research Council, the Chair of Multilingual Computational Linguistics, led by Professor Johann-Mattis List , is seeking a Graduate Research Assistant or Postdoctoral or Doctoral Researcher for the duration of 3 years .

    To be considered for this position, applicants for the postdoctoral position must have a doctorate in General Linguistics, Comparative Linguistics or Computational Linguistics, whereas those applying for the doctoral position must have a master's degree in one of the above fields.

    Remuneration is in accordance with pay grade E13 of the German public-sector collective agreement, TV-L (1 FTE for the postdoctoral position; 0.65 FTE for the doctoral position).

    You will have the opportunity to write your postdoctoral habilitation thesis or doctoral thesis, as the case may be, during your employment at the chair.


    Job description:

    Conduct research in the field of historical linguistics or linguistic typology, with a focus on the computer-assisted analysis of the lexicon.

    Compile datasets for the investigation of typological aspects of word families, and extend existing datasets that were collected for the Lexibank repository.

    Develop new methods for the investigation of typological aspects of word-family structures and cross-linguistic colexifications, as well as for their visualization and analysis.

    Participate in the organisation of the research project (organising conferences, workshops and working group meetings and providing guidance to the student assistants).


    Person specification:

    Must have a doctorate in general linguistics, comparative linguistics or computational linguistics (for the postdoctoral position) or a master's degree in one of the three fields (for the doctoral position).

    Readiness to carry out research according to the theme of the project (individual ideas and initiative are welcome). Basic knowledge of programming, specifically with Python or R (basic knowledge in phylogenetic reconstruction and JavaScript would be beneficial). Very good knowledge of historical linguistics or linguistic typology, specifically in the field of lexicon development. Good knowledge of cognitive linguistics would be an advantage. Must be a resilient and reliable team-player. Excellent spoken and written English proficiency (German proficiency is not a requirement but would be advantageous).
