    (with tenure track to W3)

to be filled at the next possible date with a six-year contract.

Following a successful tenure evaluation procedure, the appointment to a permanent Chair (W3) of Functional Diversity and Evolution of Plants is planned. The evaluation criteria will be mutually agreed upon when the position is accepted and will form the basis of the evaluation procedure. These will cover the categories of research, academic teaching, knowledge transfer and academic self-administration. The appointment to the Chair (W3) of Functional Diversity and Evolution of Plants is combined with taking over the management of TUD's Botanical Garden and the Herbarium Dresdense.

You (m/f/x) will represent the subject Functional Diversity and Evolution of Plants in teaching and research. You will contribute to teaching and further developing the faculty's degree programs Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (BSc), Biology in Society (MSc) and Molecular Biosciences and Productive Biosystems (MSc) as well as in teaching export for other faculties. Within the framework of undergraduate teaching in the Faculty of Biology, lectures are to be given in German. Your tasks will include participating in the further development and internationalization of these degree programs. Your future research focus could lie on the following fields, for example:

    • Systematics, phylogeny and phylogenomics of non-model plants,
    • Adaptation strategies of plants to climate and habitat,
    • Capturing diversity and traditional knowledge in the context of global change,
    • Functional morphology, anatomy and biomimetics.

In this context, we expect an intensive cooperation with TUD's Botanical Garden. Cooperation with other faculties (e.g., Environmental Sciences or Mechanical Science and Engineering), institutions of the university (e.g., the Biotechnological Center (BIOTEC) or the Center for Molecular Bioengineering (B CUBE), as well as non-university research institutions, such as the museums of the Senckenberg Society for Nature Research in Dresden and Görlitz, will be welcome. We expect you to participate in interdisciplinary collaborative projects, contribute to overarching initiatives such as the Excellence Strategy, and actively support academic self-administration.

We are looking for you as a personality with an international scientific track-record in the field of Functional Diversity and Evolution of Plants. This can be demonstrated by your publications, your international networking and your results of teaching evaluations. Your research achievements possess a high potential for further development. We wish for extensive experience in autonomous teaching, and successes in acquiring third-party funding. In addition to the general requirements under public employment law, applicants must fulfil the employment qualification requirements of § 59 of the Institutions of Higher Education Act in the Free State of Saxony (SächsHSG).

For content-related questions, please contact the head of the appointment committee, Prof. Thorsten Mascher, phone , email: thorsten.-

We look forward to receiving your application by June 28, 2024 (time stamp on the email server or the stamped arrival date of the university central mail service of TUD applies).

Please attach the following documents to your letter of application: a CV in tabular form, a description of your scientific career, a complete list of your scientific publications as well a compilation of the ten most important publications, a list of third-party funds acquired, a description of your teaching activities including the results of teaching evaluations (preferably of the last three years) and a future research concept including an concept for the further development of the Botanical Garden Dresden (maximum five pages), as well as a copy of the certificate of your highest academic degree.

    TU Dresden

Excellence – A matter close to our hearts

Excellence? Elitism? Opportunity or risk? The Excellence Programme, initially launched in 2005 by the German government has aroused passionate debate right from the start and still has the potential to polarise opinion.

TU Dresden (TUD) looks at it this way: excellence is all about performance and having the right attitude. For everyone here at TU Dresden – one of eleven Universities of Excellence in Germany since 2012 – it is also a matter very close to our hearts. Firstly because of the extra motivation and impetus generated, and secondly, because of the way we handle this role.

Our vision for the future can be summed up as follows: "Let us become one of the leading centres for research and teaching, with our own individual character and a special talent for networking, able to attract the best minds in Germany and from further afield." After all, it is a well-known fact that excellence in research and teaching presupposes excellent conditions. Or, to put it figuratively, for excellent crop yields, you need the right soil and weather.

TU Dresden is a comprehensive university with 18 faculties and works in close collaboration with its top performers: three Clusters of Excellence, including the "Centre for Tactile Internet" (CeTI), the Cluster "Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter" ) and the Cluster "Physics of Life" (PoL). The guiding principle here is that strong individual elements become even stronger when they work together.

The vision for the future takes this principle beyond the confines of the university: with the research network DRESDEN-concept (Dresden Research and Education Synergies for the Development of Excellence and Novelty), TU Dresden has been creating an alliance of research and cultural facilities in the city, an "excellent playground for excellent people". This bond is unique in Germany and has evolved over many years. It is not necessary to create anything new here, as it is simply a matter of building further storeys on top of an already solid structure. The measures envisaged as part of the DRESDEN-concept contribute to the overall development of TU Dresden and form an integral part of the university strategy.

Excellence is understood and practised in Dresden as an opportunity for the entire university, and in this spirit, TU Dresden takes those measures that lead to excellence – by the university, for the university – in cooperation with colleagues here and all over the world. But at the same time neither elitist nor exclusive. TUD's excellence comes from the heart – from and for our about 32,400 students, 600 professors and about 8,400 members of staff. In this way, excellence becomes the basis, the objective, the approach and the driving force. And that's why being a top performer can also be so rewarding and enjoyable.
