Enable Others to Act: Teach them to fish

After taking a week off I am back with the fourth practice in Kouzes & Posner’s work The Leadership Challenge, Enable Others to Act. The Practice has two Commitments associated with it, “foster collaboration by building trust and facilitating relationships” and, “strengthen others by increasing self-determination and developing competence”. And as we have been doing over the past several weeks, I look at the first behaviour in this practice which is, “develops cooperative relationships among people he/she works with”.

What is your definition of leadership? I am sure that we would get a lot of different responses to that question – if fact I invite you to write yours at the bottom of this post. For me leadership is like the proverb of fishing: “if you give a hungry man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach him how to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” (Lao Tsu). It’s about giving others the opportunity to grow. This week’s video blog post is my thinking on the behaviour above.

John K Whitehead & Associates coaches individuals and organizations in becoming more effective by helping them improve their interpersonal communications, emotional intelligence, and resiliency.

@John Whitehead

This principle is a pearl of wisdom .. that extends to BIG kids & the work place

I heard this from Fredrik Haren (LI)

When a child asks a question ... never give the answer

HOLD back ... refrain

Ask them: to go research ... look it up and come back & tell you

This is TEACHING them to find the answer ... helping them develop the ability to find the answer

Creativity is about asking questions

Nurture CURIOSITY & creativity

This will help builds confidence that they can find the answer

Often the answer they come up with is better the one you would have given them

Sometimes Leadership is found in simple words of wisdom .

"To handle yourself, use your head; to handle others, use your heart." Eleanor Roosevelt ❤

"A leader...is like a shepherd. He stays behind the flock, letting the most nimble go out ahead, whereupon the others follow, not realizing that all along they are being directed from behind." Nelson Mandela

"The mediocre teacher tells. The good teacher explains. The superior teacher demonstrates. The great teacher inspires." William Arthur Ward

"Our chief want is someone who will inspire us to be what we know we could be." Ralph Waldo Emerson

"Don't tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results." George Patton

"Keep your fears to yourself, but share your courage with others." Robert Louis Stevenson

"The greatest leader is not necessarily the one who does the greatest things. He is the one that gets the people to do the greatest things." Ronald Reagan
