The central department of Information Services and Computing is the service, consultation and coordination centre for the Information Infrastructure of the HZDR.

The Department Computational Science is looking for a
Cloud Architect (f/m/d). The position will be available from 1 September 2023. The employment contract is limited to two years with the possibility of longer-term prospects.


Your tasks:


  • You will take over the technical responsibility for the cloud platform at the HZDR, which includes its conception, implementation and maintenance.
  • In doing so, you will further develop the Cloud platform based on the requirements of the scientists.
  • Together with the scientists, you will develop usage models for the use of the cloud platform in scientific projects and support them in gaining the knowledge to use this infrastructure profitably.
  • You will ensure that the services offered in the Helmholtzwide platform HIFIS are easily accessible and innovative for scientists from all over Germany and their partners.

Your profile:


  • You have a bachelor or master's degree in the field of IT or an equivalent degree.
  • You have practical experience using configuration management systems, infrastructure and deployment automation (ideally Ansible and Terraform, Git) and in the administration of virtualized environments based on KVM.
  • You have experience deploying or operating medium to large scale Openstack and/or Kubernetes environments.
  • You have practical experience in at least one programming language.
  • Your experience in virtualization of GPUs is an advantage.
  • You bring a talent for communication and enjoy working in a team distributed over multiple locations.
  • Communicating fluently in English is part of your everyday life. German language skills are an advantage.
