In the context of the ERC Starting grant "HIGH-HOPeS: Higher-Order Hodge Laplacians for Processing of multi-way Signals" we are offering a number of PhD positions.

Your Duties and Responsibilities:

You will do cutting-edge research within the ERC funded project HIGH-HOPeS, present your work at national and international conferences and publish in the leading journals.

You may supervise Bachelor and Master students working on related topics and have a limited involvement in teaching.

The goal of HIGH-HOPeS is to develop methods that can utilise higher-order relationships for the analysis of complex data, going from mathematical models to efficient algorithms and software.

Specifically, we will focus on ideas from algebraic topology and discrete calculus, according to which the graph Laplacian can be seen as part of a hierarchy of Hodge-Laplacians that emerge from treating graphs as instances of more general cell complexes that systematically encode couplings between node-tuples of any size.

Specifically we aim to i) provide more informative ways to represent and analyse the structure of complex systems, paying special attention to computational efficiency; ii) translate the success of graph-based signal processing to data on general topological spaces defined by cell complexes; and iii) by generalising from graphs to neural networks on complexes, gain deeper theoretical insights on the principles of graph neural networks as special case.

What We Offer:

The position is to be filled at the earliest possible date and offered for a fixed term of three years.

The fixed-term employment is possible as it constitutes one of the fixed-term options of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Fixed-term Scientific Contracts).

This is a full-time position.
The salary is based on the German public service salary scale (TV-L).
The position corresponds to a pay grade of EG 13 TV-L.
