Since the early days of spaceflight, space has become more and more crowded with active satellites and passive space debris.

In order to maintain safe operations in space, it is necessary to have a good understanding of the space environment.

Within the field of Space Situational Awareness (SSA), Airbus Defence and Space develops innovative technologies for Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST).

Being a building block of Airbus' SSA activities, Airbus Robotic Telescope (ART) serves as ground-based test-bed and key enabler in the development of a future space-based system, allowing to test observation strategies and end-to-end processing.

ART provides real-world data for Airbus' R&D activities (image processing, data analytics, tracklet correlation, orbit determination, uncertainty realism, SSA products & services) and is participating sensor in various measurement campaigns.

ART's observation data is processed by the Airbus software framework SPOOK (Special Perturbations Orbit determination and Orbit analysis (tool)Kit).

SPOOK has been developed as tool for the simulation and optimisation of SST sensor networks and has evolved to being the central research platform for SSA algorithm and services development at Airbus.

  • Getting to know the topic and familiarization with the existing code (SPOOK), Airbus Robotic Telescope (ART) and previous research.
  • Literature review on Orbit Determination, covariance propagation, correlation, space object characterization and other relevant techniques.
  • Perform research (incl. the supervision of related supporting Master theses).
  • Implementing, testing and validating new functions with simulated and realworld data.
  • Participation to team meetings for status update.
  • Preparation of PhD thesis and documentation of the work performed.

Your offer:

  • Master's degree within aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, software engineering (or comparable education).
  • Knowledge in orbital dynamics, optics and image processing is considered an asset
  • Experience in programming (e.g. Python, Fortran)
  • You are a good team player, have excellent communication skills, and are able to work independently.
  • Fluent English.
  • Interest in Space Situational Awareness topics and Space Debris mitigation.
