Doctoral Researcher (f/m/x) - DFG Project "Construction Pioneers. Building Innovation in Upland Northern Laos (CoPi)"

Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology

  • CoPi is an anthropological reseach project that aims at studying the agents of architectural transformations with a specific focus on housing change in the rural uplands of northern Laos, an area experiencing unprecedented changes in the built environment. The project is headed by Dr Rosalie Stolz, Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology.

YOUR TASKS:


  • Developing a doctoral project within the framework of CoPi with a strong focus on agents of architectural change
  • Conducting ethnographic fieldwork for 12 to 15 months in northern Laos
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Presentation of results in the form of regular reports, lectures and publications
  • Participating in regular project meetings
  • Supporting the organization of academic and policy events (conferences, workshops, working meetings)

YOUR PROFILE:


  • Completed master's degree (MA) in Ethnology / Social and Cultural Anthropology (or related disciplines)
  • Willingness to conduct several months of ethnographic research in Laos; familiarity with the research area will be beneficial
  • Excellent knowledge of English is required; knowledge of Lao or Thai is not required but beneficial; knowledge of German or willingness to learn German for communication purposes is desired
  • Interest in houses, architecture, and materiality is expected

  • The position is available from 01 October 2023 on a parttime basis (19,92 hours per week). It is limited until 30 September 2026. If the applicant meets the relevant wage requirements and personal qualifications, the salary will be based on remuneration group 13 TV-L of the pay scale for the German public
