Who we are:

Human Rights Watch (HRW) investigates and reports on human rights abuses happening in all corners of the world.

We are roughly 500 people of 70-plus nationalities who work to protect the most at risk, from vulnerable minorities and civilians in wartime, to refugees and children in need.

The Multimedia Division is where we craft our visual messaging and deliver it to our audiences in order to raise public awareness of the human rights violations HRW investigates and documents.


The opportunity:


The Junior Producer/Editor, Audio-Visual should be video journalist able to edit and post-produce compelling stories which expose abuses, present solutions to advance rights, showcase activist partners worldwide, and persuade key audiences to embrace and value human rights.


This is a fixed-term, full-time position for one year (with the possibility of extension), with an anticipated start in July or August 2023.

This position will ideally be based in one of HRW's major offices, with a preference for Berlin, Johannesburg, London, New York, and Washington D.C., and reports to the Multimedia Deputy Director based in London.


RESPONSIBILITIES:


  • Research, produce and edit multimedia products that will further HRW's global advocacy objectives;
  • Monitor television and online appearances of HRW staff to identify key soundbites;
  • Edit and post-produce audio programs and podcasts;
  • Create audiograms and edit video clips for HRW's social media platforms;
  • Incorporate graphics and animation when appropriate to enhance video impact;
  • Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Media Department;
  • Track podcast performance;
  • Manage content distribution, logging, archiving, footage and other tasks related to production for freelance editors; and
  • Perform other tasks as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:


Experience:

A minimum of three (3) years of experience working in a professional environment is required; prior experience working in a newsroom or video production company is highly desirable.


Related Skills and Knowledge:


  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills in English are required; proficiency in another language is highly desirable.
  • Strong command of Adobe Premiere, Adobe Audition and After Effect is required.
  • Knowledge of motion graphics and animation is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of video formats, transcoding, and compression is required.
  • Solid news judgment and an eye for elements that will help HRW tell great stories is desirable.
  • Interest in human rights and curiosity about the world is desirable.
  • Excellent time-management skills and ability to prioritize tasks while maintaining a strong attention to detail is required.
  • Excellent communication skills, self-motivated, creative problem-solver, highly organized, and demonstrates the ability to work well as a member of a team are required.
  • Ability to multi-task multiple stories while also producing long-term projects, work under pressure, and thrive in a deadline-driven environment is required.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize projects with careful attention to details both in creative production and editorial content is required.
  • Demonstrate traits of tact, discretion, sound editorial judgment and the ability to function in a confidential capacity is required.

Salary and Benefits:
HRW seeks exceptional applicants and offers competitive compensation and employer-paid benefits. If based in the United States, the salary range for this position would be USD 60,000-66,000. Salary ranges outside of the United States vary based on location.
