Beschreibung

The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government.

AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.

  • Student Assistant (HiWi) for the marine geology group at AWI (M/F/d)

Background

The behavior of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) under projected anthropogenic warming is a key uncertainty in predicting future sea-level rise due to the influence of strong ice-ocean feedbacks, which are poorly understood.

Reconstructing and disentangling these feedbacks during past warmer-than-present climate states is considered to provide an enhanced basis for improved prediction of future changes in the ice-ocean-climate system.

For such, marine sediment cores collected from the last Polarstern expedition (PS128) will be investigated.

Tasks

  • General assistance in sample preparation of Antarctic marine sediment cores, such as sample weighting as well as wet and dry sieving
  • XRF-Scanning (Xray Fluorescence) to determine major and minor elements in sediment cores
  • Willingness to learn about geochemical methods applied to microfossils

Requirements:

  • Registered student
  • Experience in laboratory work
  • Good English language skills
