As part of our ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, and increase the number of women in tech, Zalando is launching the GroWIT (Growing Women in Tech) initiative for interns and working students that helps women launch a career in tech.

GroWIT offers a series of software engineering internships specifically to people who identify as women and look to jump-start their career in tech.

For women at the beginning of their career, this initiative offers a great opportunity to grow within a strong tech team, forge meaningful professional connections, and gather invaluable first experiences in tech within an environment that supports learning and growth.

The internship roles are based in Berlin and Dortmund.

As a Software Engineering Intern or a Working Student, you will be part of an expert team of software engineers and applied scientists who work towards fulfilling the needs of Zalando's customers and partners.

You will focus on designing, developing, and improving the core software system that drives the algorithmic order prioritisation and fulfilment optimisation across Zalando.

In this role, you will face three significant challenges - ensuring that the system adheres to the latest software engineering standards; gaining a comprehensive understanding of order-processing systems and identifying opportunities for its improvement; and verifying that the software design supports integration of complex multi-objective algorithms.

In your role, you will be converting real-world problems into mathematical models and designing algorithms that solve such models.

Beyond algorithmic challenges, a significant part of your role will be dedicated to creating and maintaining the software systems required to run the algorithms.

Here, you will have to ensure that the system adheres to the latest software-engineering standards, and you will gain a comprehensive understanding of order-processing systems, identifying opportunities for their improvement.

WHAT WE'D LOVE YOU TO DO (AND LOVE DOING)

Assist the development of our new and existing solutions in different programming languages, both in the backend and in the frontend (dependent on the team).
Contribute to improvements of the operational tooling (monitoring, alerting, playbooks) for our solutions.
Evaluate tools for internal usage.
Help to maintain the (technical) documentation of our teams.
Collaborate with experienced engineers and stakeholders.
Be part of the design and implementation of our software framework to cater for the increasing scale and load.
Think abstractly and discover correlations between problems, methodologies, and solutions.
Promote and support an inclusive culture and diverse team environment, fostering a positive and productive work environment for all team members.
Use a stateoftheart software development methodology.

WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF

You are currently studying as a Bachelor of Science, or have recently completed a University degree course or a certified coding bootcamp.
You have a first practical experience with Java and algorithms, solid foundations around SQL Databases and distributed systems (Clientserver, Eventbased).
You have motivation to tackle challenging topics and have ambitions to grow to become a Software Engineer.
You have great communication skills in English, both written and oral.
You're curious about software design and wish to learn how to develop systems that are easy to maintain and to extend.
You're a team player who thrives in an agile and crossfunctional environment, and is passionate about fostering a positive and productive work environment.
You prefer simple solutions over complex ones but at the same time, you are aware that complex problems sometimes require advanced algorithms.

- "You build it, you run it" approach: you have had a first experience in managing services end-to-end, from developing to deploying to monitoring and incident support is a big plus.
