Manufacturing & Engineering Internship - Qualitative and quantitative evaluation plastics within industrial sewers

We are looking for you, an ambitious Bachelor or Master's student (M/F/d), to support our department Energy & Environmental Operations by doing an internship project in Qualitative and quantitative evaluation plastics within industrial sewers for our location in Schkopau, Germany.

The department that will welcome you is the site infrastructure supplying energy, technical gases, and quality water to the consumers on site, running grids and pipe racks as well as a large variety of different facilities to provide all the required services.

Project description

At four sites in the Halle-Leipzig area, Dow develops plastics and specialty chemicals - for example to be used in intelligent packaging, hygiene products or materials for the construction industry.

Various production plants fabricate plastic pellet products that, as a raw material, are shipped via trucks to numerous downstream customers.

Caused by technological reasons as well as housekeeping and logistics related matters there is a potential of plastics ending up in the site water / waste water sewer networks which requires removal from there.

The aim of this project is to evaluate plastics potentially ending up in the sewers on a qualitative and quantitative basis and derive improvement opportunities to retain them before leaving the sewers into the outfall.

The following aspects should be included in the project work:

Description of the dynamics and boundaries associated with plastics transportation on site
Understand possible gaps within the pathways from plastics production up to shipping them
Identification of improvement opportunities to enable:
Prevention / reduction of plastics ending up in the sewers
Barriers of final retention of plastics before being discharged into the sewers outfall

Qualifications:

You are currently studying for a bachelor or master's degree or equivalent in process engineering, environmental engineering or related courses of study.
You have a good working knowledge of German and English
Process comprehension
Basic knowledge in water treatment technology
Data mining and evaluation
Good communication skills
Selfdirected working method
