In the Department »Materials« at Fraunhofer IISB we are particularly concerned with the growth of bulk crystals and epitaxial layers.

An important role in understanding these processes is played by the simulation of the heat and mass transport processes that take place during crystal growth.

Recently, machine learning techniques have also been used to accelerate the calculations and are bringing the simulations together with the experiments to gain a deeper understanding of the crystal growth process.

What you will do

You...
- gain experience in using machine learning techniques
- use results from ANSYS software to train a so-called surrogate model of the PVT process
- develop an understanding of how these models work
- use the model to answer questions about the influence of geometry and temperature profile on the growth rate of the crystal use the model to make predictions about the thermal stresses in the crystal
What you bring to the table

You...
- study mathematics, computational engineering, physics, process engineering, chemistry, materials science or a comparable field of study
- you enjoy numerical simulation and the scope of simulation programs
- are experienced in performing simulation calculations
- have experience with machine learning techniques
- you could already acquire background knowledge in the field of semiconductor materials - but this is not a prerequisite are interested in a practice-oriented thesis, which gives you an insight into the work of a research institute
