The job

The UFZ Department Ecosystem Services is part of the German Center for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. iDiv is one of four research centers of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The center is located in Leipzig and is operated as a consortium of the University of Leipzig together with the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, the Friedrich Schiller University Jena and the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research - UFZ.

It also receives support from the Max Planck Society, the Leibniz Association and the Free State of Saxony.

Your tasks

  • Quantitative analyses, empirical work and conceptual synthesis in the fields of biodiversity trends and monitoring, citizen science and links to human health
  • Active collaboration with natural history societies, museums, state
agencies, citizen science projects and other stakeholders at local, national and international level

  • Attracting third party funding and development of national and international interdisciplinary consortia
  • Supervision of graduate and postgraduate students
  • Presentation of results in international peer reviewed journal publications and at conferences

Profile:


  • Outstanding PhD in biology, ecology or related fields with experience in modelling/programming, quantitative analysis or spatial data management
  • Extensive experience in interdisciplinary research and a strong international publication record in the fields of biodiversity, citizen science and health
  • Particular strengths in quantitative, statistical biodiversity analyses, incl. time series analyses and hierarchical Bayesian models, as well as data integration of heterogeneous data from e.g. structured monitoring data, citizen science or epidemiological data
  • Longterm experience in database management, scientific programming (R and/or Python) and data visualization essential
  • Indepth experience in transdisciplinary collaboration with stakeholders from NGOs, natural history societies, museums and public agencies and track record in organizing workshops and conducting surveys
  • Experience in thirdparty project acquisition, project management and successful implementation
  • Experience in supervision
  • Excellent team player, friendly and professional demeanor
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and German
  • Attracted by the opportunity to develop a scientific research program and working group in the department
