We seek:


At the Chair of Quantum Optics, we have developed groundbreaking methods to control trapped ions using high-frequency radiation and use them as an elementary switching unit (a qubit) in a quantum computer.

We research and develop this system and thus prepare the basis for novel types of scalable quantum computers.

In the Faculty IV:
School of Science and Technology, Experimental Quantum Optics, we are looking for a researcher as soon as possible at the following conditions:

  • 100% = 39,83 hours
  • Pay grade 13 TV-L
- limited the duration of 2 years


Your tasks:


  • Your research activities will focus on novel approaches and methods for quantum computers with trapped ions

Your tasks include:

  • Responsible planning, simulation and construction of innovative experimental apparatuses
  • Preparing and carrying out experiments with trapped ions, data analysis, and publishing scientific results
  • Guidance of other scientists in the team
  • Cooperation with national and international research partners and thirdparty funding agencies

Your profile:


  • University degree in physics
  • Doctorate in physics
  • Sound knowledge of quantum mechanics
  • Essential for successful participation in the abovementioned project are a high level of interest in the task at hand, exceptional commitment and initiative, and a strong ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
  • International publications and participation in academic exchange (conferences, reviews, research reports, etc.)
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is desired: experimental quantum optics with atoms, molecules or solidstate based systems, quantum information processing, laser spectroscopy and cooling, microwave technology, laser technology, optics, vacuum technology, control electronics, and computer control of experiments.
  • Very good knowledge of English
