Working at the Charité
Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin is a joint institution of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Charité was once again voted Germany's best hospital because our employees do an outstanding job every day - in patient care as well as in research, teaching and administration.

Patients from all over the world rely on the expertise of our staff as well as on state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatment methods.

Job Overview

  • Your responsibilities will include the establishment and validation of these methods and their use to characterize patients with CSU. In addition to samples collected from patients during consultations, sera from a comprehensive and already existing biobank can be used. Furthermore, relevant IgE and IgG autoantibodies from patient sera will be purified by chromatographic methods and investigated with respect to posttranslational modifications such as glycosylation
  • Project description: Chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) is a common autoimmune disease, but its pathomechanisms remain to be elucidated in detail. The two known autoimmune subtypes of CSU, type I and type IIb, remain poorly characterized and currently cannot be diagnosed in routine clinical practice. Therefore, it is unclear how many CSU patients have autoimmune type I or type IIb and how they differ in their immunologic and clinical profiles, including disease activity, duration, and response to treatment.
  • The aim of this project is to characterize type I and type IIb autoimmune CSU in detail, to determine their prevalence and to identify associated immunological and clinical features. For this purpose, our group is currently developing appropriate methods such as ELISA assays for IgE against autoantigens, peptide arrays for relevant IgE autoantibodies, auto IgE assays as well as in vitro and ex vivo mast cell models.

We are looking for

  • Experience in handling and researching primary immune cells, possibly also mast cells
  • Experience in cell biology and molecular biology and biochemical methods (ELISA, Western blot, cloning, CRISPR/Cas, flow cytometry, chromatography)
  • Experience with in vitro cell culture models
  • Excellent English skills (oral and written)
  • High motivation, flexibility, very good organizational skills, ability to work in a team
  • Enthusiasm for immunology and translational/basic research
  • Research assistants are given sufficient time for their own scientific work in accordance with their employment contract
  • We offer close supervision during the training period and beyond as well as flexible working hours
