  • The Faculty of Technology, research group 'Biomathematics and Theoretical Bioinformatics', has for a research project at the interface between mathematical genetics and (bio)informatics the following job opening:
  • Research Position
  • ID:
-
Wiss23420

  • Start: as soon as possible
- part-time 75 %
- salary according to Remuneration level 13 TV-L
- fixed-term

  • The working group Biomathematics and Theoretical Bioinformatics, led by Prof. Dr. Ellen Baake, forms a bridge between mathematics and bioinformatics. The main area of work is the mathematical theory of biological evolution, in particular mathematical population genetics. We aim to understand the dynamics of genes in populations under the joint influence of mutation, selection, recombination, and genetic drift. Specific attention is paid to the ancestral processes, tracing back the genealogies of individuals from a contemporary population. Methods come from probability theory (interacting particle systems, duality, branching processes, large deviations) as well as from the theory of dynamical systems (difference and differential equations, bifurcation theory).
  • Your Tasks
- research on genealogical processes under various combinations of evolutionary forces such as mutation, selection, and recombination, in particular via stochatic simulation (65 %)
- teaching (3 hours per week during term) (25 %)
- participation in the organisational tasks of the group (10 %)

Employment is conducive to scientific qualification.
We offer
- salary according to Remuneration level 13 TV-L
- fixed-term (3 years sentence 1 of the WissZeitVG; in accordance with the provisions of the WissZeitVG and the Agreement on Satisfactory Conditions of Employment, the length of contract may differ in individual cases)
- part-time 75 %
- internal and external training opportunities
- health, consulting and prevention services
- reconcilability of family and working life

  • Your Profile
We expect
- scientific university degree (e. g master's degree or diploma) in computer science, mathematics, biomathematics or statistical physics
- solid knowledge of probability theory and stochastic simulation
- extensive programming experience
- very good written and spoken English
- independent, self-reliant and committed way of working
- ability to work in a team
