Job Announcement Ref. #

The Senckenberg Gesellschaft für Naturforschung (SGN) is a member of the Leibniz Association and is based in Frankfurt am Main, Germany.

SGN conducts natural history research with more than 800 employees and research institutions in seven federal states. The Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) explores the interactions between biodiversity, climate, and society.

Research Associate Taxonomist and Morphologist (M/F/d)

(100% full-time position / part time solutions available)

BIOfid provides access to current and historical biodiversity literature.

It is a collaboration between SGN, the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg at Goethe University, and the working group Computational Humanities/Text Technology at Goethe University.

Since the start of the pilot project on data mobilization from historical Central European biodiversity literature in German language, we have gradually expanded our service at the organismic (vascular plants, birds, moths and butterflies, soil invertebrates) and technological level (Text Mining Pipeline and Semantic Search Engine).

The developed tools should be re-usable to permit processing of further text corpora with other organism groups and/or other geographic regions in the future.

The applicant should lead the development of bilingual (German, English) domain-specific vocabularies and ontologies (e.g., taxonomy, anatomy, biotic interactions, phenology) for user-oriented semantic search and data extraction.

The applicant should support the development of use cases that utilize data generated by text mining to advance fundamental research in ecology and biogeography concerning, e.g.

past distributions of species and biotic interactions, such as pollination, herbivory or habitat preferences.

She or he should also present BIOfid advances and tools to the wider community and contribute to training researchers in using BIOfid tools.

The applicant will work in a team of software developers, taxonomists, ecologists, librarians and experts in informatics and text mining.
