The German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) is one of the world's leading research institutions and think tanks in the field of global sustainable development.

It provides policy advice and carries out training tasks on the basis of its own independent research. The Research Programme "Inter
- and Transnational Cooperation" is one out of four research programmes at IDOS. One of its clusters analyses the contribution of development policy to the global common good, to which the "Call for Applications" is linked.

Topics for research proposals could link to one or more of the following areas of interest, all of which can be pursued in general or with a focus on specific development policy actors, such as Germany, the United Nations, the European Union, and non-state actors including the private sector:

  • Politicaleconomy of development policy and/or inter
- and transnational cooperation

  • Future of development policy / "beyond aid"
  • New trends in Official Development Assistance (ODA) and / or South-South Cooperation (SSC)
  • Geopolitics and development (policy)
  • Interfaces between development policy and other policy areas (climate change, security, foreign policy, etc.)
In 2023, the Research Programme "Inter
- and Transnational Cooperation" offers two (2) short-term visiting researcher positions of
4-6 weeks each
from May to December 2023. The positions offer applicants the opportunity to work on their own original research related to the stated areas of interest. The stay at IDOS provides an opportunity to build institutional linkages, to explore future research collaborations and gain exposure to the unique working environment of a research institute that is also an influential policy think tank.

Interested persons from all levels of seniority and all countries can apply, including PhD students who are in the writing phase of their doctoral work.

Visiting researchers will be hosted at IDOS in Bonn, Germany.

Visiting Researchers are expected to give a talk in front of the IDOS scientific community on their research during their stay and have the opportunity to (co-)author work in one of IDOS publication formats.

Selection criteria:

  • Experience and excellence of the applicant in the specific research area
  • Relevance of proposed research activities to the programme's thematic foci
  • Researchers based at institutions in Africa, Latin America, and Asia are especially encouraged to apply

Interested researchers should submit:

  • Letter of motivation explaining why IDOS and the research programme "Inter
- and Transnational Cooperation" would be a good fit for their work (1 page)

  • A concept note with a brief description of expected outputs (23 pages). The note can also indicate possible links to ongoing work of researchers in the cluster
  • Curriculum vitae
  • A proposed schedule of what they will do while in Bonn, and up to two preferred time periods of their research stay (1 page)
  • A letter from their employer or PhD department confirming ongoing affiliation
Travel expenses and cost of stay at IDOS will be covered according to IDOS travel reimbursement policy. An honorarium is possible and will be calculated based on the IDOS fee schedule. _Guest researchers who require a visa to enter Germany will be provided with a letter of support if invited._
