The following position at the Heidelberg Center for Ibero-American Studies (HCIAS) of Heidelberg University is to be filled as soon as possible, with a limited contract until March 31, 2025:

Research Associate (f/m/d) - Postdoc
Part-time, 75% of the weekly working time


The position is part of the junior research group "Food for Justice: Power, Politics, and Food Inequalities in a Bioeconomy", which is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Food for Justice looks into social mobilization targeted at injustices in the food system and into social and political innovations that address inequalities undermining food security such as class, gender, race, ethnicity, and nationality.

Food for Justice combines theoretical perspectives on global inequalities with social movement research related to food justice and will explore issues and solutions in both Europe/Germany and Latin America/Brazil.


Your tasks:


  • Conception, management, and implementation of own quantitative research on social mobilization, social innovations, and consumer behavior, particularly protest surveys and national surveys in the areas of food and agriculture
  • Data analysis of previously collected data including organization of quantitative databases
  • Write scientific articles for renowned journals and book chapters, organize panels, and present papers at conferences and seminars to disseminate research findings along with other members of the research group
  • Participation in the synthesis of research results

Your profile:


  • Completed PhD in sociology or other social sciences (political science, economics, or anthropology)
  • Experience in quantitative research
  • Very good knowledge of English, both written and spoken
  • Relevant publications or active research agenda with manuscripts accepted for publication

Also welcome are:


  • Good knowledge of German and/or Brazilian Portuguese
  • Expertise in one or more of the project′s research areas (food movements, agroecology, solidarity agriculture, food security, social innovation, social mobilization, social inequalities, gender inequalities)
  • Research experience in Germany and/or Brazil
  • Regional connections between Europe and Latin America are especially welcome
