In liver cirrhosis, portal hypertension and systemic inflammation lead to complications and decompensation with a high mortality rate.

It is assumed that bacterial infections and translocation due to the disturbed intestinal barrier trigger systemic inflammatory reactions that lead to acute decompensation and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF).

Despite increasing research, the mechanisms by which the gut-liver axis influences the decompensation of liver cirrhosis remain unknown.

By integrating metabolomic data from the portal vein and hepatic vein with the corresponding circulating 16S rRNA amplicon profiles from buffy coat and stool of TIPS patients, two very interesting metabolites could be identified that explain the influence of the gut-liver axis in the decompensation of liver cirrhosis and are suitable for therapeutic approaches.

The aim of this study is to identify specific species of the gut microbiome that are involved in the alteration of metabolites.

These findings will provide new insights into how these possibly gut microbiome-derived or metabolized metabolites contribute to decompensation in patients with liver cirrhosis.

In addition, we aim to test new therapeutic options to prevent decompensation of liver cirrhosis by targeting specific species of the gut microbiome involved in the synthesis and/or modification of these metabolites to prevent further decompensation by influencing the gut-liver axis.

We are a dynamic team and look forward to nice, team-oriented support
