What you will do

During this PhD project you will be working on hearing protectors of the future, which not only protect people from harmful noise, but enable them to communicate with colleagues and hear important sounds, such as warning signals.

Current hearing protectors considerably impair speech intelligibility and the detection and localization of acoustic signals. At the same time, novel and promising algorithms can, in principle, segregate individual sound sources for improved perception.

However, there is still a lot of research required to understand the impact of complex acoustic scenes and the effects of hearing protection and novel technologies on auditory situational awareness.

As a new team member, your task will be to research and develop prediction models for different aspects of auditory situational awareness with and without hearables.

Different technologies for improvement will be compared and evaluated.

You will be designing and conducting listening experiments in complex acoustic scenarios with different types of hearing protectors and hearables with normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners.

You will research, develop and validate different predictions models for speech intelligibility, listening effort as well as sound detection and localization.

Your experiments will also validate novel algorithms for improving speech and sound perception. As part of the PhD project, you will also document your work in scientific articles and conference presentations.
