For the Institute of Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Genomics we are looking for an

PhD position (M/F/d)

Evolutionary Genetics

This 3-year PhD is part of the ERC consolidator grant BeePath to Prof.

Lena Wilfert, studying how the acquisi-tion of vector-borne transmission has impacted on the epidemiology and evolution of an important bee patho-gen, Deformed Wing Virus.

The project integrates evo-lution in natural populations of honeybees and bumble-bees with experimental viral evolution in the lab, fitness assays in the virus and its hosts and modelling to un-derstand the ultimate drivers of pathogen and host fit-ness.

The project team includes two post-docs and labwork is supported by an experienced technician ded-icated to this project. At the institute of Evolutionary Ecology and Conservation Genomics, an interactive and international team studies diverse topics in evolu-tionary ecology, including host-pathogen interactions (Prof. Wilfert), conservation genomics (Prof. Sommer) and pollinator ecology (Profs. Ayasse and Tschapka). The project involves international collaboration with Prof Mike Boots (UCLA Berkeley) and Dr. Ben Temperton (University of Exeter).

Your profile:

- a relevant undergraduate degree in biology, zoology, ecology, molecular biology or a related field; a relevant postgraduate degree is desirable
- excellent oral and written English language skills
- expertise in the fields of disease and molecular ecology and evolution, experimental evolution or a relevant related field
- practical experience in working with insects/bees, experimental evolution, molecular biology or microbiology and NGS sequencing desirable
- analytical skills in molecular evolution, statistics and bioinformatics desirable
- experience or interest in mathematical modelling advantageous

Your responsibilities:

- running virulence experiments in bees and insects
- quantifying viral fitness by qPCR
- analysing molecular evolution
- viral and host life history analysis and modelling
- presenting results at international conferences and manuscript preparation
- motivation for own scientific further qualification (conception, execution and evaluation of scientific studies) in the context of the doctorate
