Vacancy Notice 091/2023

The Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU) is an internationally oriented and regionally networked university with a strong research profile.

The Faculty of Process and Systems Engineering seeks to fill the following vacancy at the Institute of Department of Fluid Dynamics and Technical Flows:2 postgraduate training fellowships leading to the award of a PhD in Marie S.

Curie Project MFLOPS, "Multiphase Flow Optimisation Strategies with Industrial Applications"

Salary Scale:
Marie Curie Unit Costs

Date commencing:

May 2023

Fixed term until:

36 months

Contract status:

100 %

The positions are in the newly established Marie S. Curie doctoral network MFLOPS, "Multiphase Flow Optimisation Strategies with Industrial Applications". The project started January 2023.

Objectives:
(1) To develop a numerical model for droplet of bubble nucleation on solid surfaces and predict the subsequent growth and detachment under the influence of a convective flow velocity. (2) Application to gas diffusion layers of proton exchange membranes used in fuel cells and hydrogen electrolysers will be investigated.

Expected Results:
Mathematical documentation, numerical codes and simulation results will be reported in 6-month deliverables.

Other responsibilities:

  • Participation in the activities of the Doctoral Network
  • Secondment and collaboration with an industrial partner
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Excellence in fluid mechanics
  • Interest in machine learning and optimisation methods

Position:
DC7/ Modelling real-fluid thermodynamics in compressible flows with phase-change

Objectives:
(1) To develop a consistent thermodynamic closure model for highly compressible flows, including thermal, wall heat transfer and dissolved air effects, (2) To implement a tabulated approach suitable for incorporation of the model in a density-based flow solver

Expected Results:
Mathematical documentation, numerical codes and simulation results will be reported in 6-month deliverables.

Other responsibilities:

  • Participation in the activities of the Doctoral Network
  • Secondment and collaboration with project partners
  • Excellent programming skills
  • Excellence in fluid mechanics
  • Interest in machine learning and optimisation methods
In both positions, the opportunity to pursue a PhD is given and is supported accordingly.

  • Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.
  • Must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.
