The Chair of Computing and Society at the Faculty of Computer Science is looking for a


Full-time PhD position (m,f,x) to work on Trustworthy AI/ML for 3 years with 39,83 hours per week, TV-L E12/13:
The goal of the chair is to address challenges that arise when AI/ML algorithms interact with human users. For instance, we develop algorithms to make AI/ML models more fair, explainable and robust.

As a part of your PhD, you will lead research projects on human-centric AI/ML - with a focus on Large Language Models (LLMs).

You will be joining an excellent team of researchers at RUB.

You will also be embedded in the Research Center for Trustworthy Data Science and Security which is a part of the University Alliance Ruhr.

The Research Alliance Ruhr is a joint undertaking of the three major universities in the Ruhr area.

The four research centers focus on "One Health Ruhr", "Chemical Sciences and Sustainability", "Trustworthy Data Science and Security" and "Future Energy Materials and Systems." In addition, the Research Alliance Ruhr has established a "College for Social Sciences and Humanities".

Your tasks:

  • Your main task is to conduct research on human-centric AI/ML with a focus on LLMs. The specific topics are flexible and can be adjusted to your personal preferences and strengths.

Your profile:


  • At least Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or Statistics, the Master's programme should be nearing completion.
  • Solid grasp over fundamental concepts of AI/ML like biasvariancetradeoff, generalization and gradient descent.
  • Prior experience with Natural Language Processing and LLMs.
  • Experience with Python programming language.
  • Experience with popular ML frameworks: pytorch, transformers and scikitlearn.
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken).

If the position is funded by third-party funds the employee has no teaching obligation.
