The Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is a member of the Helmholtz Association (HGF) and funded by federal and state government.

AWI focuses on polar and marine research in a variety of disciplines such as biology, oceanography, geology, geochemistry and geophysics thus allowing multidisciplinary approaches to scientific goals.


  • Research assistant for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (M/F/d)

Background

The AWI's NMR laboratory focusses on the structure elucidation of organic molecules such as toxins, peptides or polysaccharides, as well as on metabolomic changes in cold-water organisms in response to environmental stress.

We seek a highly-motivated staff member to support the general operation of the NMR laboratory, the preparation, measurement and data analysis of scientific samples, as well as support and instruction of external users.


Tasks

  • Operate NMR equipment, carry out maintenance and calibration
  • Process and interpret NMR data
  • Prepare and purify samples / analytes for NMR measurements
  • Advise and instruct students, technical staff and external users
  • Support laboratory organization, data & sample management

Requirements:


  • Academic degree in the field of chemistry, physics, engineering or similar
  • Practical experience in operation of magnetic resonance devices (NMR) and data evaluation with relevant software (Bruker TopSpin, MestRe, ACD/Labs)
  • Practical experience in the preparation (or purification) of samples for NMR
  • Commitment and willingness to learn and adapt analytical methods
  • Good communication skills and fluency in spoken and written German or English

Further Information
This position is limited to 2 years with the option for permanent employment.

The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level
13.
