ossib**le**The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) is an inter-governmental organisation headquartered in Abu Dhabi, mandated to promote the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy in the pursuit of sustainable development, energy access, energy security and low-carbon economic growth and prosperity. IRENA's mission is to play a leading role in the ongoing transformation of the global energy systems as a centre of excellence for knowledge and innovation, a global voice of renewable energy, a network hub for all stakeholders and a source of advice and support for countries. At present, IRENA has 168 Members (167 States and the European Union) that acceded to its Statute, and 16 additional States in the process of accession and actively engaged.


IRENA Planning and Programme Support office is responsible for internal coordination and the strategic integration of extra-budgetary resources in IRENA's programmatic work; timely reporting on programmatic matters to governing bodies and individual donors; coordination of the Agency's climate work; strengthening IRENA's presence in Europe, including at the EU level and with Germany as Host Country; and leading the cross-cutting Agency initiatives as required.

PPS serves as the focal point for the UNFCCC.

It also leads IRENA's work in the Global Climate Action where it facilitates the energy team work, comprising international organizations, non-governmental institutions and the private sector associations and initiatives to accelerate action in the energy sector.

PPS is also IRENA's focal point in the NDC Partnership and other collaborative efforts that promote the energy sector transformation through climate action.


The purpose of the Associate Professional (AP) Programme is to enable talented and promising university graduates and post graduates to gain first-hand experience in the work of IRENA and a deeper insight into the role of the Agency in promoting the widespread and increased adoption and sustainable use of all forms of renewable energy.

The programme offers valuable exposure to IRENA's main activities and programmatic areas. On occasion, there are also opportunities in support areas such as administration, finance, human resources and public information.


Duties and Responsibilities
The Associate Professional will perform the following duties under the supervision of the Director, Planning and Programme Support:

  • Undertake research and analysis of energy and climate issues to stay abreast of the developments;
  • Support preparation of analytical briefs, background notes and other materials;
  • Support preparation of programmatic documents such as the Work Programme and Budget
  • Support preparation for and IRENA presence at events, including organizational aspects and followup actions as required;
  • Support the work of IRENA in climate action activities of Members and partner entities and initiatives;
  • Support the preparation of proposals for extrabudgetary projects;
  • Support the work of other areas of PPS responsibility as required;
  • Attend meetings and other gatherings upon request; and
  • Other duties as required.
