The Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) in the Helmholtz Association is an international biomedical research center dedicated to understanding the molecular mechanisms of health and disease with the goal to devise new diagnostics and medicines.

The MDC is a member of the Helmholtz Association, Germany's largest scientific organization, and offers an engaging research environment with cutting-edge research infrastructure.

We strive to enable MDC scientists to develop their ideas, technologies, and inventions into opportunities that are attractive to industry and investors.

By advising MDC scientists in creating industry alliances and spin-off companies, the Innovation and Commercialization department strives to attract top scientists to the MDC.

The department is responsible for the management and commercialization of intellectual property (IP) and for building and maintaining interactions with relevant stakeholders including academics, funders, potential licensees, early stage investors, and industry partners.

We are looking for someone to join the MDC as Head of Innovation and Commercialization (f/m/d).


Ihre Aufgaben:


  • Take responsibility for all technology transfer activities of the MDC, in particular the strategic development of the department as well as the conception of innovation projects
  • Supervise licensing associates and support staff and oversee the Innovation and Commercialization Office's daytoday operations
  • Manage a growing portfolio of biomedical technologies
  • Identification and protection of IP
  • Drive commercialization through licensing and creation of spinoff companies
  • Support collaborative research with industry and assist scientists in securing funding to develop commercial opportunities from their research findings
  • Promote awareness of IP and technology transfer and provide training to scientists as well as connections with investors and industry experts
  • Work with a variety of innovation stakeholders including academics, funders, potential licensees and early stage investors
  • Act as the MDC representative with national and international business organizations, institutions, and platforms, and at partnering and networking events
  • Work proactively with MDC administration, management, and other departments to develop and implement relevant strategy and policy in support of the MDC's mission and vision
  • Provide strategic direction and advice on all aspects of intellectual property, technology commercialization and industry cooperation to MDC management

Ihr Profil:


  • Completed degree (Master's level or equivalent) in the life sciences, preferably with a doctorate
  • Further education in business administration or demonstrated comparable professional experience is required
  • Very good knowledge of the funding system for technology transfer projects
  • Professional experience in science, innovation management and/or technology transfer in academia or in a related function in industry
  • Sound knowledge and experience in entrepreneurship, spinoffs, licensing and intellectual property rights
  • Experience with thirdparty funding management is strongly desirable
  • Entrepreneurial mindset, critical thinking as well as planning and organizational skills
  • Leadership experience
  • Independent, structured and goaloriented work, strong teamwork and communication skills
  • Excellent project management and negotiation skills
  • Strong conceptual skills, especially for strategy development and implementation as well as organization development and processes
  • Comfortable as a visible leader on campus promoting technology transfer and representing MDC within the local innovation ecosystem
  • Fluent written and spoken German and English are essential
