We at Airbus Central Research & Technology work on cutting edge technologies for future airborne and spaceborne systems, providing novel functionalities whilst reducing the environmental footprint of Airbus products and services.

You will join the team of researchers working on advanced solutions for highly secure communication systems.

In this context, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) provides a way to distribute encryption keys, which is immune to eavesdropping. In the future, the quantum internet will rely on entanglement to share qubits between quantum computers.

The scope of the PhD thesis is to develop new concepts and test benches for quantum information networks. You will work with free-space QKD setups, and also model key aspects of the future quantum internet.

The work will be done in close collaboration with scientists in academia and industry, to develop breakthrough solutions for connectivity in aerospace.

Your tasks and responsibilities

  • Inspire and research new concepts for quantum communications networks
  • Design, implement and test free space quantum and classical optical communication links
  • Perform modelling and simulations on quantum links and networks

Desired skills and qualifications

  • You already have a Master degree in Physics or similar field of study.
  • You have a good theoretical understanding of quantum mechanics and optics.
  • You are familiar with optical sources, components and detectors.
  • You have experience assembling and aligning optical setups.
  • You are familiar with computer programming and networking, or enthusiast about learning it
  • You are proactive, motivated and organised.
  • You are a good team player
  • You have good interpersonal and very good verbal and written communication skills in English, as you will be working in a multinational team
