The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association.

Our mission:
Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

Metoprolol belongs to the substance class of cardioselective β-blockers and is primarily taken for the treatment of hypertension. In mammals, it is metabolized by CYP2D6. Its transformation products do not contribute to the pharmacological effect of metoprolol in humans. However, the degradation of metoprolol in the human organism can be inhibited by inhibitors of CYP2D6, e.g. selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (antidepressants) such as paroxetine, resulting in an enhancement of the pharmacological effect. In this work, the biotransformation of metoprolol in the zebrafish embryo (ZFE) and its influencing factors will be investigated.

It will be tested to what extent a transfer of the influence occurring in humans to the test organism ZFE is possible.

Profile:

  • Bachelor in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Life Science, Pharmacy or related disciplines
  • Matriculated at a German university
  • Experience in analytical Chemistry
  • Experience in biological labs (advantageous); experience in working with zebrafish embryos is a plus but not mandatory
  • Interest in working with organisms
