The ICCT has an opening for a highly self-motivated and enthusiastic associate researcher to help analyze and communicate the technical, social, and political feasibility of decarbonizing domestic and international shipping and ports, with an initial focus on supporting efforts to prepare for upcoming revisions to EU maritime decarbonization policies.

Additionally, you will assist with a project to model greenhouse gas intensity targets for fuels used in international shipping that would be aligned with the Paris Agreement temperature goals.

This full-time position is expected to begin in Summer 2023. The position will be based in the Berlin, Germany office and will report to an ICCT Researcher.


You Will:

  • Estimate fuel use, greenhouse gases, and air pollution from ships
  • Study how alternative fuels, batteries, shore power, and windassisted propulsion can be used on ships
  • Advise policymakers on ways to reduce lifecycle GHG emissions from ships
  • Prepare maps, figures, reports, and deliver presentations
  • Engage with researchers, advocates, regulators, industry, and other stakeholders
  • Collaborate with ICCT staff on emerging projects based on need and perform other duties as assigned

You Have:

  • A Bachelor's degree (Master's degree preferred) in engineering, transportation, environment, or a related field
  • Experience or interest in transportation and climate change policies
  • Experience or interest in the maritime shipping sector is a plus
  • Strong computational skills and proficiency in Python, ArcGIS or QGIS, Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Knowledge of SQL is a plus
  • Ability to clearly explain research results and their implications to both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Ability to work independently and engage effectively with team members
  • Strong English communication skills, both written and verbal

Benefits:

This full-time position will be based in our Berlin, Germany office and have a salary of €63,945.
