We are looking for an ECRD (ESA Classified Restricted Data) Operation Support Technician to work at either ESOC's premises in Darmstadt, Germany or ESRIN's premises in Frascati, Italy.

In this role you will provide key support to the IT Security Section of ESA's IT department.

These services are essential to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, availability and business continuity of the agencies' Communication and Information Systems, in compliance with the ESA Security Directives.

Tasks and Activities:


The scope of work will include:

  • Operating the ESA Classified RESTRICTED Data services solution for the tasks allocated to the ECRD Services Team. This involves but is not limited to management, monitoring and support of the ECRD Workplace Services, ECRD infrastructure, ECRD Encryption services, ECRD Remote Access services, key management, user service requests, troubleshooting and coordination with other Service Providers (e.g. for network, workplace), etc.
  • Managing incidents, either technical or user related from creation to resolution and followup.
  • Managing new service requests as agreed with the functional evolution team.
  • Producing, documenting, optimizing and maintaining operational processes and procedures to run the service in line with ESA's requirements, as defined and documented by the ECRD Service Manager. These processes and procedures evolve and are discussed and agreed on during regular meetings.
  • Assessing, prioritizing, estimating workload and once agreed, implementing user and service provider requests related to the current ECRD services and the evolution of the service or solution(s).
  • Continually striving to improve the functionality and user experience of ECRD by providing practical input, suggestions and possible solutions/proposals for improvements, based on experience of the daily operations.
  • Supporting evolution work of ECRD by providing feedback gained from operating experience to evolution projects (note: the actual functional evolution is out of scope of this task/WP).
  • Supporting, maintaining, and updating/upgrading at an agreed schedule, technical components including hardware, software, appliances, security and network devices.
  • Providing technical guidance and advice including support on configuration and management of requested technical solutions.
  • Providing regular reporting on workload and operations related activities and participating in meetings to identify avenues for efficiency gains.

Skills and Experience:


The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • Technical Degree (BSc., Diploma or equivalent) from a recognized Institution or equivalent, with at least four years of relevant experience.
  • IT Security Architecture.
  • Modern IT technologies used for securing endpoints (PCs, Mobile devices, IoT, etc.), Infrastructure (network, security zones, storage, computing infrastructure and cloud), Operating Systems and Applications.
  • SOC/CERT tools and process knowledge.
  • Specific IT technologies deployed in the scope of the contracted tasks:
  • In depth Windows Active Directory, Windows and Linux system and security administration.
  • Open standards based federated Identity and authentication technologies (e.g. SAML, oAuth2, OpenID).
  • F5 Big IP.
  • Trusted List for Approved cryptographic products.
  • VMware Virtualization and VDI technologies.
  • Thales encryption solutions.
  • Zabbix.
  • Advenica encryption and data protection technologies.
  • MS Office 365 and MS Office automation tools (standalone).
  • MS Azure.
  • Varonis Data Advantage & Directory Services.
  • Skybox vulnerability management solution technologies.
  • SIEM technologies.
  • Vulnerability management tools.
  • Pentesting tools.
  • Firewalling, VPN, RAS technologies (e.g. Stormshield).
  • ITSM tools (BMCRemedy, ServiceNow).
  • BeyondTrust PAM solution.
  • Information Security Management according to ISO 2700
  • Eligible for obtaining a personnel security clearance at ESA SECRET level.
The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • In possession of an IT Security industry certification/specialization or technical vendor certifications.
