Job Description Summary


The Penn Geomicrobiology Laboratory in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania seeks a full-time Research Scientist to oversee the continuous cultivation of deep-sea anaerobic thermophilic microorganisms to support research on their physiology and bioenergetics.

Research activities include anaerobic cultivation of chemosynthetic microorganisms, epifluorescence microscopy, spectrophotometry and gas chromatography.

The position also involves training of students in the laboratory as well as routine data collection, analysis, interpretation and synthesis.

Other responsibilities include assistance with general maintenance of laboratory equipment and spaces and other managerial duties under the direct supervision of the Principal Investigator.

This is a one-year term appointment, with the possibility of renewal.


Job Description:


The Department of Earth and Environmental Science (EES) combines elements of geology, physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics to study the Earth and its relationship with life.

Areas of inquiry range from the atomic and molecular to the largest scales, from ancient times to the present and into the future.

Research in EES encompasses minerals and rocks, soils and sediments, mountains and landscapes, the atmosphere, the hydrosphere and climate, fossilized and living organisms, and human impacts on the environment.

DUTIES:

Same as above under limited supervision, in addition to:

  • collecting published data for meta-analyses on microbial physiology, metabolism and phylogeny.
- perform basic genomic analyses as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Research Specialist B level:

Research Specialist C level:
- sterile technique for the preparation of microbiological media/reagents and cultivation of microorganisms
- qualitative and quantitative analyses involving epifluoresence microscopy
- aqueous or gas chemistry measurements (UV-VIS spectrophotometer, gas chromatography)
- coordination, collection and documentation of samples (e.g., biomass, filtrates), and data analysis from time-series experiments with minimum supervision
- molecular methods such as gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction, as well as extraction and quantification of nucleic acids


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with anaerobic microbial cultivation
  • Experience with continuous (chemostat) cultivation
  • Experience with scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy
  • Experience handling laboratory equipment and managing laboratory housekeeping activities
