Description
The European Astronaut Centre (EAC) was established in 1990 and is located in Cologne, Germany. Home to ESA's Astronaut Corps, it is the European centre of excellence for astronaut selection, training and support.

The team at EAC equips European and international astronauts with the skills and knowledge they need to fly to the International Space Station (ISS) while preparing for an exciting future of exploration beyond low Earth orbit.

EAC has established its medical expertise for astronauts, including preventive medicine, evidence based medicine, nutrition and fitness.

In addition, the Centre provides public relations assistance for human spaceflight and educational activities, as well as promoting opportunities to industry for commercial experiments.

You will report to the Leader of the LEO Exploration Group.


Duties

Your tasks and responsibilities will include:

  • managing the EAC Medical Team's resources, both human and financial, as delegated by the LEO Exploration Group Lead;
- leading the definition and implementation of medical and psychological aspects of the ESA astronaut selection, certification and annual re-certification processes;
- defining and providing medical support and healthcare to astronauts, including the provision of appropriate clinical facilities and clinical expertise;
- defining and implementing preventive measures for human spaceflight;
- defining and implementing medical policies, requirements and standards, healthcare projects, procedures and operations functions, as well as real-time mission support for human spaceflight;
- leading the development and implementation of new medical capabilities for future human spaceflight activities, including specific elements of the ESA Medical System for Exploration;
- providing administrative support to the ESA Medical Board and representing ESA in the applicable multilateral medical forums for human spaceflight;
- leading the development of space medicine competencies and know-how across ESA Member States;
- supporting the LEO Exploration Group Lead as agreed in interactions with industry and Member States for specific aspects of the EAC Medical Team's responsibilities.
In collaboration with the SciSpacE Team (HRE-RS), you will support all human research aspects for exploration.

The Space Medicine Team provides administrative support to the ESA Medical Board and represents ESA in the applicable multilateral medical boards and forums for human spaceflight for ISS and Artemis.

You will also be responsible for identifying, assessing, managing and reporting the health and safety risks in your area of responsibility.

Education
An advanced degree in medicine, combined with medical certification valid in an ESA Member State, is required.


Additional requirements

  • Understanding of the international and Agencyrelated work contexts, with the ability to achieve consensus and foster cooperation among different teams and stakeholders and coordinate multidisciplinary activities across the Agency with international partners, organisations and academic institutions
  • Experience in team management and leadership functions, including human resource management, budgetary control and strategic development
  • Experience in aerospace medicine and/or medical space operations, with a sound knowledge of human spaceflight, particularly space operations
The duty station for this post is the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany.

You will be required to support mission operations outside of nominal hours and should have a high level of flexibility, a positive attitude to teamwork, the ability to travel domestically and internationally and a willingness to spend significant periods of time abroad.

A working knowledge of French and German is desirable.
