Job advertisement no. 008/2024
The department Drug Design and Optimisation, led by Prof. Dr. Anna K. H. Hirsch, at the Helmholtz

Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) in Saarbrücken, is seeking

**Three Postdoctoral researchers (f/m/d)
The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland (HIPS) was founded in 2009 as a site of the

Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) in collaboration with Saarland University and is the first

publicly funded non-university research institution in Germany explicitly dedicated to pharmaceutical

research. HIPS' focus is on the discovery and development of novel active ingredients against infectious

diseases.

Researchers at HIPS collaborate closely with Saarland University and the local pharmaceutical industry as

well as national and international research institutions and companies. Since 2009, HIPS has constantly

grown to over 220 employees in 2023 and is currently undergoing further spatial and thematic expansion

funded by the Saarland state and federal government. Core research areas of HIPS will be strengthened

and complemented by adding state-of-the-art bioinformatics and microbiota research to the institute's

portfolio. To accommodate for the increasing number of researchers at HIPS, new lab and office spaces

will be set up in the coming years.

Responsibilities:

In the department Drug Design and Optimisation, we develop novel active agents against bacterial (e.g.,

Acinetobacter baumannii, Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Streptococcus pneumoniae) and viral

pathogens. Our projects are part of an industrial collaboration and have a strong translational focus. You

will be part of an interdisciplinary team of scientists aiming at the development of small organic molecules

as inhibitors of innovative but underexplored bacterial targets, thus directly contributing to the generation

of new anti-infectives with unprecedented mode of action. Your tasks include working on current topics in

drug discovery as well as preparing of presentations as a basis for discussion in project meetings as well

as supervising doctoral students.

Requirements:

You have a PhD degree in chemistry or pharmacy with a focus on synthetic organic chemistry and are

highly motivated and interested in questions related to pharmaceutical research. The ability to work in an

international team and excellent communication skills in English are also required for this position.

Furthermore, sound knowledge in the design and synthesis of small organic molecules is strongly required.

We also require experience with common analytical methods (NMR spectroscopy, LC-MS). As well as

experience in writing and publishing scientific manuscripts. Willingness to also be involved in the biological

evaluation of compounds is advantageous. Initial experience in supervising undergraduate and graduate

students would be an added plus. The confident handling of standard computer software such as MS Office

(required) or Xcalibur (advantageous) is a matter of course for you.
