What you'll do:


Reporting directly to our Chief Executive Officer, our Vice President of Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) is a key member of our executive leadership team and accountable for setting Northland's overall HSE strategy.

Combining best practices in safety standards (public, contractor, and employee), health methodologies, and environmental governance, you will be responsible for planning, prioritizing, implementing, and maintaining HSE goals and initiatives across the globe.

Northland's global portfolio includes operating generating facilities, an electrical distribution utility, and projects both under development and construction in multiple jurisdictions and climates based on several different generating technologies.

You will be a strategic partner to our business unit leaders in Offshore Wind, Onshore Renewables, Thermal & Utilities, and Green Hydrogen, and will spend time understanding their businesses to ensure best-in-class HSE practices and processes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the organization in elevating the HSE culture and moving towards a more positive image, mindset and attitude on HSE matters including employing a variety of communication techniques to improve HSE awareness and ensure HSE messaging is understandable
  • Regularly assess current HSE culture and use that information to initiate programs and initiatives to support the cultural change process at the business unit, facility, or project level
  • Help increase ownership of HSE matters and adoption of HSE programs across all levels of the organization
  • Develop strategies to achieve HSE objectives in alignment with Northland's business goals and values and deploy HSE programs in conjunction with business and project leaders to ensure the HSE objectives are met
  • Establish and maintain relationships with key business unit leadership via a listening and learning attitude that results in improved HSE performance
  • Provide investigative expertise, oversight, leadership and strategic direction to ensure thorough evaluation and assessment of all safety and health incidents, particularly involving highly visible and complex situations
  • Track key HSE metrics and proactively present recommendations and accident/incident information to executive leadership team
  • Liaise and build relationships with JV and external partners, stakeholders, industry experts, and vendors as appropriate
  • Actively participate in the development of JV HSE plans to ensure Northland HSE standards are maintained in JV project environments
  • Lead a team of dedicated HSE professionals with responsibility for talent development and mentoring related to technical expertise and leadership capability

Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years HSE experience in a relevant industry such as energy, utilities, EPCM and/or infrastructure preferably including experience working within an international environment
  • Bachelors' degree in safety engineering, environmental engineering or related field; advanced professional degree or other professional credentials such as a CRSP designation, NEBOSH International General Certificate in OH&S or equivalent HSE certification not required but considered an asset
  • Demonstrated successful experience leading a progressive HSE organization in a project based corporate environment and under a matrix structure
  • Must have sound knowledge of global environmental, heal
