A major key to success in facing climate change and creating more resilient supply chains is the transformation of feedstocks from fossil resources to renewable raw materials.

Led by the Hamburg University of Technology, the CRC 1615 is developing processes and reactors that respond flexibly to the fluctuating properties of renewable raw materials, thus enabling self-adapting, more resilient process engineering

The offered position belongs to the project A03 "Surface-functionalised nanoporous solids: Towards responsive materials for SMART reactors with adjustable fluid adsorption, transport and molecular hydrogen".

This project aims at the development of a multifunctional porous material system with controllable adsorption, fluid transport as well as integrated hydrogen sensing.

The material design employs a hybrid sandwich structure integrating nanoporous silicon (np-Si) and nanoporous gold (np-Au) with tailorable pore size and surface functionalisation of pore walls.

The stimuli-responsive np-Si/np-Au hybrid will be evaluated as a building block for SMART reactors in form of (i) protective layers for enzymatic reactions in mixed solvents and (ii) selective adsorbents with dual size-exclusion and specific modes of action.

YOUR TASKS

  • Synthesis, functionalisation and characterisation of the porous material systems
  • Investigation of the hydrogen sensing properties of the above materials
  • Optimisation of the materials for use in SMART reactor environments

YOUR PROFILE

  • Preferably you already have experience in one of the following areas: porous materials, electrochemistry, condensed matter physics
  • A sound knowledge of English and ideally, but not necessarily, a good knowledge of German

OUR OFFER

  • We offer you the opportunity for scientific qualification leading to a doctoral degree (PhD)
  • An interdisciplinary, international and cooperative environment.
The Institute of Material and X-Ray Physics is located on the Science City Bahrenfeld campus as a bridging facility between the Hamburg University of Technology and the Photon Science Division of the German Electron Synchrotron DESY

  • Flexible and familyfriendly working conditions, 30 days of vacation per year
  • Special conditions in selected sports and fitness clubs

We particularly encourage women to apply. Due to their underrepresentation, they will be given priority incases of equal suitability, qualifications and professional performance.
