Carbon Dioxide Removal - a media analysis
Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), also known as negative emissions, is a climate change mitigation strategy
that aims to remove CO2 from the atmosphere and durably store it underground, in biomass, or in other
geophysical sinks. Limiting global warming to "well-below 2°C" compared to pre-industrial levels requires at
least some CO2 to be removed, however the appropriate role of these technologies is highly contested in
science and policy. It has been argued that CDR may deter near-term emissions reductions, alongside other
technological "promises" that feature in the solution space. On the other hand, failing to prepare for and
support CDR scaling would compromise the long-term achievement of climate goals. This project aims to
advance our knowledge of how CDR discourses are propagated in the print media, tracking the types of

technologies that receive attention and analyzing whether the complexity and conditionality of CDR is
reflected in current public debates.

Portrait of the MCC
MCC was founded in 2012 by Stiftung Mercator and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)
and since 2014 it is affiliated with the Technical University (TU) Berlin. Our research is carried out in seven
working groups and it addresses the grand challenges of climate change and of governing the global
commons. Our research is rooted primarily in economics and other social sciences. We provide scientific
policy advice and aim to identify policy-relevant solutions. Cooperation with high-profile international
partner organizations provides a network of excellence and foster the high quality of the research at MCC.
Within a few years, MCC has established itself prominently in the climate policy research landscape, ranked
as No. 1 of climate think tanks in Europe. For more information about the institute, please visit the MCC
website.
