The UFZ

The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) with its 1,100 employees has gained an excellent reputation as an international competence centre for environmental sciences.

We are part of the largest scientific organisation in Germany, the Helmholtz association.

Our mission:
Our research seeks to find a balance between social development and the long-term protection of our natural resources.

The job

In our group, we have been working on the population ecology of microbial communities for several years.

The postdoc (f/m/x) is expected to work on microbial communities whose composition, functions, interactions, and relationships with the environment have not yet been deciphered in detail and therefore often remain unpredictable in their behavior.

The postdoctoral researcher's work is expected to contribute to deeper understanding of the dynamics and equilibrium of microbial communities within ecologically prescribed paradigms in space and time.

Your tasks

  • Teamwork with passionate PhD students on the topic of population analysis of complex microbial communities.
  • Using single cell analysis methods such as flow cytometry, high throughput cell sorting and NGS technologies to characterize individuals in microbial communities.
  • Application of ecological tools from macroecology to measure, visualize, and interpret microbial community structure, function, and stability based on population ecology theory.
  • Performing downstream big data anlysis with high performance computing clusters.
We offer

  • Excellent technical facilities which are without parallel
  • Work in interdisciplinary, multinational teams and excellent links with national and international research networks
  • A vibrant region with a high quality of life and a wide cultural offering for a balance between family and professional life
  • Interesting career opportunities and an extensive range of training and further education courses
  • Remuneration up to the TVöD publicsector pay grade 13 including publicsector social security benefits

Profile:

  • PhD in biochemistry, microbiology, bioengineering, population ecology and similar.
  • Strong programming skills in Python, R, or Matlab.
  • Experience in sequencing technologies.
  • Experience and background in data science and handling of large data sets.
  • Strong interests in single cell technologies and in reactor design and facilities.
  • Strong interest in the theory of population ecology.
  • Ability to work independently and motivated in an interdisciplinary team.
  • Excellent English skills in speech and writing.
