In order to support Optical Instruments, Airbus Defence and Space is looking for a


Team Leader Optical Architecture and Suppliers Development (d/f/m):

You will join the transnational Department of the Optical Instruments division, in charge of Optical Instruments development within the Earth Observation & Science directorate in Space Systems.


Those developments cover instruments for ESA, CNES, DLR and EU programmes from UV to Thermal Infra-Red spectral range like LIDARs (ATLID, MERLIN), the Multi-Spectral Instruments (Sentinel-2, Sentinel-4) from the Copernicus programme, IR instruments (LSTM, Trishna), meteorological instruments (IASI-NG, Sentinel-5 and METimage) embarked on MetOp-SG, instruments for scientific missions like EUCLID, cameras embarked on LEO and GEO satellites, as well as national eyes only programs.

Those instruments are developed in Toulouse (France), Ottobrunn and Friedrichshafen in Germany.


The Optical Architecture and Supplier Development team is responsible for the following activities:

  • The definition and development of the optical architecture following defined processes for the space-borne instruments within the projects in phase B2/C/D.
Contribute to future programs in phase 0 or A/B1 for the optical domain.

  • Manage the procurement of optical equipments (components and subsystems) development subcontracted to suppliers based on specifications written by the optical architects by ensuring the ontime, oncost, onquality performances.
  • Prepare the future by developing new enabling optical technologies through internal and/or external R&D studies.
  • Development of partnerships with industrials within the domains (polishing, photonics, coatings and optical component suppliers).
The Optical Analysis, Architecture and Supplier Development multicultural team is made of 17 engineers specialized in optical development. The position is based in Ottobrunn, close to Munich.

A part of the team is located in Friedrichshafen; this requires periodic travels to stay in contact with the team.

This role is also available with reduced weekly hours and an adapted scope of tasks.

Your tasks and responsibilities:


  • Manage locally the team following the Airbus leadership model by delegation from the head of department: task and role definition, information cascading, coaching and trainings, and associated administrative tasks (annual interviews, team review, feedback session,).
  • Maintain and develop skills and expertise within the team, for instance using trainings, lessons learned
  • Ensure adequacy between headcounts and workload and Recruitment activities
  • Ensure newcomers are adequately guided and correctly embedded within the Airbus structure
  • Ensure work that packages for projects are implemented on time, on cost, on quality and provide technical support to projects whenever necessary
  • Implement technical capitalization, expertise and crossfertilisation for optical architecture and suppliers development
  • Define the optical supply chain strategy for german projects and future programs, in collaboration with the head of department
  • Contribute to the projects major anomalies investigations and solutions
  • In the frame of studies, R&T and projects, ensure the right technical, technological and industrial decisions are taken in the optical domains by direct involvement of experts and Technical authority in key points and reviews
  • Contribute to the success of the improvement plans within the Optical Instruments division.
  • Perform a clear and synthetic weekly reporting towards the head of department
  • In the frame of this Team Leader role, travels in Europe are necessary.
