QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
The qualifications and skill requirements for this position include:

  • Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution;
  • A minimum of two (2) years of related experience and/or training that includes academic advisement, academic placement, financial aid, and the administration of military and VA educational benefits;
  • Must have experience in working with and advising veterans in an educational setting;
  • Ability to work productively and independently and as a team member;
  • Possess strong written, oral, and relational skills;
  • Ability to network and build professional relationships with students, staff, faculty, and community members;
  • Must be studentcentered and customer service oriented;
  • Ability to work with a diverse population;
  • Exhibit sound judgment and discretion in working with students, student records, and the general public;
  • Ability to maintain strict accuracy and be detailoriented;
  • Ability to work independently, sometimes under pressure of deadlines and competing priorities;
  • Willing to handle routine tasks, special assignments and projects;
  • Ability to adhere to strict confidentiality standards in accordance with federal regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The essential job functions and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the Military & Veterans Advisor at the Massey campus;
  • Assist military students and student Veterans in maximizing their potential for personal and academic success;
  • Help develop and administer programs and services at IRSC that help remove barriers to the success for military students and student Veterans;
  • Evaluate military training and experience for college credit based on the American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations;
  • Enhance the experience of military students and student Veterans at IRSC by helping them utilize academic and support services;
  • Through collaboration with faculty and staff, identify military students and student Veterans who need additional assistance to be successful and work proactively to address areas of concern to help them achieve their goals;
  • Manage a caseload of assigned students and working with those students through degree or certificate completion;
  • Participate in community outreach initiatives to promote IRSC partnerships and collaboration.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


The primary duty of the Military and Veterans Student Services Advisor is ensuring that all military members, Veterans, and military-affiliated dependents are provided with accurate and timely information, support, and advisement in all aspects of their journey from recruitment to graduation.

This position provides comprehensive academic advising services, evaluates military transcripts, and processes VA educational benefits and certifications to help students achieve their goals.

The specific duties and responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Under the direction of the Director of Military and Veteran's Services, the Military and Veterans Services Advisor will assist in planning, organizing, and monitoring activities and programs related to military and Veteran services;
  • Assist in creating an inclusive campus environment that address the unique needs of student Veterans and militaryconnected students;
  • Aid in conducting outreach for new military and Veteran students;
  • Coordinate on and off campus military and Veteran activities;
  • Help military students and Veteran students navigate the federal and state resources available to them and provide appropriate referrals;
  • Provide specialized admissions assistance and academic advising to veteran students;
  • Submit enrollment certifications to the DVA utilizing VA ONCE;
  • Monitor student Veteran enrollment and reports changes to the VA as needed;
  • Comply with DVA and related federal regulations, state statutes, and current practices;
  • Provide support to students in the planning and achievement of educational and career goals through the creation of Guided Pathways and monitoring of student progress;
  • Guide and make recommendations to students through the registration process;
  • Assist students in planning a program consistent with their abilities and interests;
  • Interpret previous college coursework and military transcripts to assist in the award of accelerated credit and development of Guided Pathways;
