The working group leader will operate at the interface between the clinic director and head of the working group, the scientists, physicians and the technical staff.

The tasks include own creative research and creative input into the projects of the group, support of manuscript and grant preparation, project management, and communication with collaboration partners, managing laboratory equipment, support of on
- and off-boarding processes of institute ́s employees. He/she will support the clinical director in the communication with collaborating laboratories, funding bodies and authorities.


The scientific interest of the laboratory lies in the analysis of early life immune regulation, mainly in response to allergens and infections.

The analyses are performed in clinical cohorts, in murine models and in in vitro models.

The aim of the research group is (I) to expand the understanding of early immune mechanisms that influence long-term health and disease (II) to investigate the immune mechanisms in allergies and tolerance and to translate new insights into new prevention and/or treatment strategies and (III) to better understand immune mechanisms in response to infections, mainly RSV infections, and use this knowledge for risk assessment and vaccination.

Our research group is involved in leading positions in regional, national and international research collaborations and consortia like the German Center for Lung Diseases (DZL), the Excellence Cluster RESIST ("Resolving Infection Susceptibility") or the clinician scientist research school TITUS- Early priming and prevention.

The head of the research group, Gesine Hansen, is speaker of TITUS, Co-Speaker of RESIST and board member of Hannover site of the DZL.

The laboratory is located in the modern Pediatric Research Center next to the Department of Pediatrics promoting translational research. It hosts modern equipment for cellular, immunological research including biosafety level 1 to level 3 facilities.

The group members are affiliated with local graduate school programs and contribute to the curricula of local master and PhD programs.
