The Philipps University, founded in 1527, offers multiple award-winning teaching for around 22,000 students and tackles the important issues of our time with excellent research across a broad spectrum of science.

The Research Training Group Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes (GRK 2937, Spokesperson: Professor Dr.

Peter Graumann, funded by the German Research Foundation, DFG), analyzes those chemical building blocks (nucleotides) which nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA are composed of in different microbial species in order to uncover both their valid principles of nucleotide metabolism, species-specific adaptations in nucleotide-related metabolic pathways, and mechanisms for nucleotide modifications.

Within the GRK, we offer a

Qualification position with the goal of a doctorate

The qualification position is located in the subproject ""Structural and mechanistic characterization of enzymes and complexes mediating mRNA- and signaling nucleotide decay in B.

subtilis" " led by Dr.
Patricia Bedrunka.

The main focus is on the investigation of enzymes of catalytic activity, regulation and the elucidation of the underlying structures.

The position is offered for a period of 3 years. The starting date is October 1st 2023.

The position is part-time (65 % of regular working hours) with salary and benefits commensurate with a public service position in the state Hesse, Germany (TV-H E 13, 65 %).

Tasks:

- development of an original research project on high independence
- investigation of the function of proteins/ complexes with nucleotides
- characterisation of enzymatic activities
- structure detemination via cryo
  • EM and X-Ray crystallography
- physiological investigations in bacterial model systems
- multidisziplinary collaboration within an international environment

Within the framework of the assigned tasks, the opportunity for independent scientific work is offered, which serves own scientific qualification.

The working contracts limit is based on sentence 1 WissZeitVG.

Profile:

- degree from a university or similar higher education organization (Diploma, Master oder equal) in the field of biologiy, biochemistry, chemistry with a focus on biochemistry, biotechnology or pharmacy
- experience in working with microorganisms
- ability to carry out molecular biological (cloning) and biochemical experiments (protein purification)
- interest and first experiences in structural biology (e.g. X-Ray crystallography)
- motivated and passionate team player

The motivation to gain your own scientific qualification (e. g. through a doctoral project in the field of biochemistry/mocrobiology with a focus on cell biology) is expected.

Philipps-Universität supports the professional development of young scientists through the offers of the Marburg Research Academy (MARA), the International Office and the position for university didactics as well as the possibility to participate in the graduate program International Max Planck Research School IMPRS-Mic and the Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO).
