The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) is pleased to announce the opening of a new Associate Researcher position in its Fuels Program and invites all eligible applicants to apply.

The ICCT is an award-winning, independent, global, non-profit research organization that supports the effective design and implementation of policies to address the impacts of the global transportation sector on climate change and public health.

Our organization achieves this by providing high quality and timely data-driven research to public officials at all levels of government - city, state, national, regional and international - as well as to civil society and the media.

The ICCT offers a mission-driven and culturally diverse workplace where intelligence, flexibility, transparency, and good humor are highly valued.

Join our team of more than 100 talented researchers and operations staff with offices in Washington D.C., San Francisco, Berlin, Beijing, and São Paulo.

The ICCT seeks a highly motivated and committed Associate Researcher who will contribute their energy and creativity towards research that will play a critical role in the deployment of advanced fuels, developing more equitable transportation policies, and the decarbonization of the transport sector.

This position will focus particularly on policy approaches and technologies necessary to reduce emissions from non-road transport sectors and heavy-duty vehicles, including sustainable aviation fuels (SAF's), advanced biofuels, hydrogen and e-fuels.

The Associate Researcher position will provide the opportunity to work at the intersection of technical climate analysis, public policy and technology.

Representative work can be seen at the ICCT's fuels program page.

This full-time position is based in our San Francisco, California, Washington, D.C offices, or Berlin offices and will report to an ICCT Program Lead.

You Will:

  • Perform quantitative analyses of large datasets to evaluate the technoeconomics, resource availability, and climate impacts of different fuel production pathways
  • Study methods and policy approaches to support the deployment of alternative fuels
  • Review and summarize technical and scientific literature, and review the work of colleagues and outside consultants
  • Author or coauthor blogs, briefing papers, memos, working papers, journal articles, and white papers to communicate research findings and the policy implications
  • Advise government officials, policymakers, NGOs, academic experts, or industry partners on technology options and policy approaches to reduce the climate impacts of transport fuels
  • Prepare presentations and present findings in public forums, such as workshops and conferences, as well as in private forums, such as inviteonly stakeholder meetings and policymaker briefings
  • Help to organize outreach activities, such as briefings, meetings, and workshops

You Have:

  • B.S. degree required (MS or PhD highly desirable) combined with 24 years' work experience in engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, or related technical field
  • Demonstrated research, education, or work experience related to energy, transportation, climate change, public health, or public policy
  • Excellent and demonstrated quantitative, analytical, and research skills, such as experience collecting and analyzing large datasets, drafting technical papers, and distilling research evidence into key actions.
  • Ability to clearly explain research results and their implications to both technical and nontechnical audiences
  • Demonstrated experience with the aviation sector or hydrogen is a plus
  • Demonstrated intermediate to advanced skill with Excel; experience with Python or GIS is a plus
  • Experience preparing and giving public presentations in English
