Beschreibung

The Competence Center of Cultural Heritage Digitization at Fraunhofer IGD develops and automates 3D scanning technologies using structured light amongst others.

Accurate and fast 3D scanning of high-detailed object surfaces is a crucial challenge when looking at the large number of objects waiting in museum archives to be digitized, or industrial digitization tasks.

Both the guarantee of the best possible scanning results, as well as a user-friendly operation for non-technical people, still need to be added by extending the current structured light scanning system.

After an initial state-of-the-art research followed by a practical implementation phase this topic can be extended to a B.Sc. or M.Sc. Thesis.

What you will do

The main task is to extend and optimize the existing scanner software towards better performance and a higher quality output.

A possible extension is the integration of a second camera in the active scanning process to verify calculated 3D points and to obtain valid digitization of occluded areas of the object.

In addition, an integration of a XY Stage for automated scanning of several objects and the stitching of several partial scans of objects that exceed the measurement volume is another possible extension.

We offer an introduction into our processing workflows, which generate high quality 3D models from acquired data, plus hands-on experience with a state-of-the-art 3D digitization scanner that features mechanical subpixel lens-shifting, reaching higher resolutions than common pixel-shifting techniques.

What you bring to the table

  • Very good C++ programming skills
  • Strong knowledge in mathematics and linear algebra
  • Proficient English skills
  • Precise, responsible, independent worker
  • Basic knowledge about transformation matrices, homographies and projective geometry
  • Experience in Computer Vision
  • Experience with the frameworks Qt, OpenCV and Boost is advantageous
The weekly working time is 10-20 hours.
