The Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) in Berlin is Germany's premier wildlife research institute, one of seven research institutes in the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.

V., an institute of the Leibniz Association and jointly funded by the German federal and state governments.

The IZW focuses on the life histories and mechanisms of evolutionary adaptations of mammals and birds, their limits and their conservation in natural and anthropogenically influenced environments.

The institute operates within the fields of evolutionary ecology, ecological dynamics, evolutionary genetics, wildlife diseases, reproduction biology and reproduction management.

In its Department of Evolutionary Genetics in connection with the Berlin Center for Genomics in Biodiversity Research (BeGenDiv), the IZW is seeking (for the period of

, 2024) to appoint a


Senior Science Policy Officer

(50 %)

Specific tasks include**:

- transform hands-on experience with ABS policies in field work to highlight both challenges and successes from interaction with these national policies.
- interact with the Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE) and European Reference Genome Atlas (ERGA) projects to transform DSI case studies that will highlight the importance of open access to DSI and the resulting legal and policy implications of these scientific examples.
- take a leadership role in the German Nagoya Protocol Hub Network and DSI Scientific Network
- manage and coordinate scientific experts and input across the BGE, ERGA, and DSI Scientific Network to build, develop, and implement a cohesive outreach strategy
- work closely with relevant DSI/ABS projects at the Leibniz Institutes DSMZ and IPK to integrate and synthesize parallel work streams into an effective, coordinated science engagement strategy up until COP16 (tentatively scheduled for Dec


Requirements:


  • Law degree with excellent understanding and knowledge of international policy frameworks
  • Excellent knowledge of English (able to work in English, written and spoken) plus a second UN language.
  • 5+ years of experience in science policy, scientific management, regulatory issues, UN processes, and/or research infrastructures and databases.
  • Direct experience with access and benefitsharing issues, digital sequence information, and/or the Nagoya Protocol.
  • Leadership and project management experience preferably with international projects of political dimension.
  • High level of demonstrated responsibility, diplomacy, teamwork, flexibility, engagement in crosscutting projects
  • Availability to travel both internationally and domestically
  • Openness and sensitivity in dealing with people from other cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
The place of work is BeGenDiv, at the Botanical Museum, Koenigin-Luise-Strasse 6-8, 14195 Berlin. The earliest start for this position is October 2023. Working hours comprise
19.5 hours per week (50 %), with salary according to TVöD (Bund) level E 14.
